Lattie F. Coor Jr. 1936-2026, 2014 Arizona Historymaker

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Lattie F. Coor Jr. on Thursday, July 16, 2026 at age 89.

Honored as 2014 Arizona Historymaker, Lattie was the 15th president of Arizona State University whose tenure achieved major milestones for ASU as a research institution.

His successor ASU President Michael M. Crow (2023 Arizona Historymaker) commented, “ASU would not be the institution it is today without Lattie Coor’s vision, leadership and commitment to the community.”

Michael Crow continues, "As ASU’s 15th president, Lattie helped move the university into a new era. During his tenure, ASU achieved Research I status, expanded its multicampus vision, connected with the community and strengthened the philanthropic foundation that helped accelerate its growth.
He understood that ASU could become a major research university guided to support the success of Arizona and its people. He and Elva warmly welcomed Sybil and I, and then became beloved colleagues, friends and mentors.
With Lattie's passing, ASU and the state have lost a true champion. Sybil and I will miss him dearly, but his legacy will continue to shape this university and Arizona for generations to come."

Barbershop chairs from 1900s

Barbershops have changed but not Angel Delgadillo's Route 66 shop. They still use his father's 1926 chair. Mary Perona took pictures at Navajo Co. Historical Society in Holbrook so you can see the similarity to Angel's in Seligman. Photo shows Zona Lorig interviewing Angel for his oral history when he was honored as 2023 AZ Historymaker. •

Historymakers honored by Gov Hobbs: Dolan Ellis and Marshall Trimble

Sharing Arizona history in songs and stories, these two great friends continue to be recognized, recently by Governor Katie Hobbs on December 5. Marshall Trimble was named 2019 Arizona Historymaker and Dolan Ellis was named 2023 Arizona Historymaker by the Historical League.

Dolan writes on Facebook:
WHAT AN EXCITING WEEK...
Thanks to past mayor of Scottsdale, Sam Kathryn Campana, who secured the meeting, Marshall Trimble, (Arizona's Official State Historian), and I were reappointed to our respective positions by Governor Katie Hobbs, in her chambers on the 9th floor of the executive tower, at the state capitol building on West Washington in Phoenix. For me, this reappointment was extra special. Not only is Gov. Hobbs the 13th governor to appoint me as "Arizona's Official State Balladeer, and it is my 57th year at being such, I got to share this honor with my long time pals, Marshall Trimble and and Sam Campana.
But wait, there's more...
Not only that, but in true balladeer style, I whipped out my old geetar and laid a quick serenade on the governor, by singing a couple of new tunes that I have written about Tubac, where Merilee and I now make our home. ("A Toast to the Ghosts of old Tubac" and "On the Border of Mexico".)
Thank you to all involved who made this event so enjoyable.
"The Balladeer"

Michael M Crow honored at 2023 Arizona Historymaker Celebration

A Board Meeting in Australia prevented Michael Crow from personally accepting his honor of 2023 Arizona Historymaker™ as Educator and Innovator: under his leadership as president, Arizona State University achieved national renown. But that did not stop those who appreciate the work he is doing for Arizona State University from supporting him at the event October 14 at Arizona Heritage Center. He joined us via a pre-recorded message on the big screen.
