Historymakers honored by Gov Hobbs: Dolan Ellis and Marshall Trimble

Sharing Arizona history in songs and stories, these two great friends continue to be recognized, recently by Governor Katie Hobbs on December 5. Marshall Trimble was named 2019 Arizona Historymaker and Dolan Ellis was named 2023 Arizona Historymaker by the Historical League.

WHAT AN EXCITING WEEK...

Thanks to past mayor of Scottsdale, Sam Kathryn Campana, who secured the meeting, Marshall Trimble, (Arizona's Official State Historian), and I were reappointed to our respective positions by Governor Katie Hobbs, in her chambers on the 9th floor of the executive tower, at the state capitol building on West Washington in Phoenix. For me, this reappointment was extra special. Not only is Gov. Hobbs the 13th governor to appoint me as "Arizona's Official State Balladeer, and it is my 57th year at being such, I got to share this honor with my long time pals, Marshall Trimble and and Sam Campana.

But wait, there's more...

Not only that, but in true balladeer style, I whipped out my old geetar and laid a quick serenade on the governor, by singing a couple of new tunes that I have written about Tubac, where Merilee and I now make our home. ("A Toast to the Ghosts of old Tubac" and "On the Border of Mexico".)

 Friends, family and Historical League members gathered round to congratulate 2023 Arizona Historymaker™ Dolan Ellis during the October 14 Celebration.

All ages enjoy 2023 Arizona Historymakers Exhibit

 Young and old, guests crowded the exhibit to view the 2023 Arizona Historymakers™ Exhibit October 14. A celebration of months and months of preparation by the Historical League, the ribbon cutting was met with cheers and applause.

How are the Arizona Historymakers™ selected?

In the summer of 2022, a letter seeking nominations of living individuals for the 2023 AZ Historymakers was sent to members of Central Chapter of the AZ Historical Society and the Historical League. A committee of Historical League members then researched each nominee and compiled a one-page biography of that nominee's contributions to the State of Arizona.

The 2023 Selection Committee was composed of a variety of individuals from different fields and interests, and included some of the Historical League's previously honored Historymakers. The Historical League is grateful for their willingness to review and evaluate more than 60 nominations. Through a series of deliberations, they chose the nine outstanding honorees we celebrated on October 14, 2023.

Oral Histories integral part of Arizona Historymakers Program

 What is an Oral History Interview? a well-prepared interviewer questioning an interviewee and recording their exchange in audio or video format. Oral history is a method to learn about past events from the spoken stories of people who lived through them. It enables us to take account of those many aspects of history that are not recorded in documents.

We are so grateful to Norma Jean Coulter, Carolyn Hartman, Zona Lorig, Josephine Pete, Tom Shumard, and Diane Smith for interviewing the 2023 Arizona Historymakers.

If you ask any of the interviewers, they will tell you it is a very rewarding experience.

 Music runs through every fiber of Dolan’s life. As Arizona’s Official Troubadour Dolan Ellis has traveled in his jeep to every corner of the state documenting its stories and legends. They become inspirations for his songs. Honored as 2023 Arizona Historymaker, he continues to share his love of Arizona culture and history with his many fans world-wide.

Unveiling 2023 Arizona Historymaker Exhibit

 Ribbon cutting and unveiling of 2023 Arizona Historymakers™ Exhibit was first on the agenda for the October 14 Celebration. Special invitations for the early unveiling event were given to Historymakers, dignitaries, sponsors and guests. Speeches were made. The crowd was enthusiastic. National History Day students had great views from the balcony. Lots of photos taken!

Set up time for 2023 Historymakers Celebration at AZHC

Lots of activity at the AZHC in preparation for the 2023 Arizona Historymakers™ Celebration. So many details go into planning this event. The committee did a fabulous job; everything was ready.

Stage set in Steele Auditorium, tables ready in the courtyard, extra wires to Brown Theatre for over flow crowd, chairs labeled for Historymaker seating, Historymaker Exhibit finished, Welcome Bags, caterers, valet parking . . . the list was very long.

NHDAZ students showcase their projects at Historymakers Celebration Oct. 14

National History Day AZ students will be at Arizona Historymakers™ Celebration on October 14 at AZHS beginning at 3 pm. Cathy Shumard writes, “8 NHDAZ students with 2 teachers and 6 parents have accepted our invitation to showcase their award winning projects.”

With topics such as “Black Barbershops: Cutting to New Frontiers”, “John F. Long: Opening Frontier to Phoenix Building,” and “Sesame Street: New Frontiers in Intellectual and Social Education”, incorporated into websites, documentaries and exhibits we can see first hand the work they have done. It is with great enthusiasm that we meet these industrious students who show such potential . . . they could become future Historymakers.

Dolan Ellis, 2023 Arizona Historymaker

 Dolan Ellis – Arizona’s Official State Balladeer since 1966; composer of over 300 songs about Arizona was recently interviewed by Historical League member Dr. Josephine Pete. The Historical League is proud to recognize Dolan as a 2023 Arizona Historymaker for all that he has contributed to Arizona.

Celebration of the 2023 Arizona Historymakers is October 14, 2023 at Arizona Heritage Center at Papago Park, Tempe.
