Historymakers honored by Gov Hobbs: Dolan Ellis and Marshall Trimble

Sharing Arizona history in songs and stories, these two great friends continue to be recognized, recently by Governor Katie Hobbs on December 5. Marshall Trimble was named 2019 Arizona Historymaker and Dolan Ellis was named 2023 Arizona Historymaker by the Historical League.

Dolan writes on Facebook:
WHAT AN EXCITING WEEK...
Thanks to past mayor of Scottsdale, Sam Kathryn Campana, who secured the meeting, Marshall Trimble, (Arizona's Official State Historian), and I were reappointed to our respective positions by Governor Katie Hobbs, in her chambers on the 9th floor of the executive tower, at the state capitol building on West Washington in Phoenix. For me, this reappointment was extra special. Not only is Gov. Hobbs the 13th governor to appoint me as "Arizona's Official State Balladeer, and it is my 57th year at being such, I got to share this honor with my long time pals, Marshall Trimble and and Sam Campana.
But wait, there's more...
Not only that, but in true balladeer style, I whipped out my old geetar and laid a quick serenade on the governor, by singing a couple of new tunes that I have written about Tubac, where Merilee and I now make our home. ("A Toast to the Ghosts of old Tubac" and "On the Border of Mexico".)
Thank you to all involved who made this event so enjoyable.

How are the Arizona Historymakers™ selected?

In the summer of 2022, a letter seeking nominations of living individuals for the 2023 AZ Historymakers was sent to members of Central Chapter of the AZ Historical Society and the Historical League. A committee of Historical League members then researched each nominee and compiled a one-page biography of that nominee's contributions to the State of Arizona.

The 2023 Selection Committee was composed of a variety of individuals from different fields and interests, and included some of the Historical League's previously honored Historymakers. The Historical League is grateful for their willingness to review and evaluate more than 60 nominations. Through a series of deliberations, they chose the nine outstanding honorees we celebrated on October 14, 2023.
Congratulations to the 2023 Arizona Historymakers:
Frank M. Barrios, Michael M. Crow Ph.D., Angel Delgadillo, Dolan Ellis, The Honorable Terry Goddard, Denise D. Resnik, Jeffrey M. Trent Ph.D., Daniel D. Von Hoff M.D., Mrs. Elizabeth J. White.

Historymaker Marshall Trimble entertains at the Recognition Luncheon

Renee Donnelly, Margaret Baker and
Betsy Davis

Always entertaining, Marshall Trimble sang ballads and told stories of early Arizona. Starting with an explanation about Arizona's four seasons, "Almost Summer, Summer, Still summer and Christmas," he shared his passion for this wonderful state. Growing up in Ashfork, he has a lot of memories of Arizona. The Historical League is pleased to present a donation to Marshall Trimble's Scholarship Program at Scottsdale Community College. https://maricopa.academicworks.com/opportunities/8899

2014 Historymaker Marshall Trimble

Esteemed Arizona Historian And Author Entertains Payson
by Gail Hearne, Special to the Payson Roundup

Marshall Trimble, Arizona’s Official State Historian and author, will entertain us with “Trimble’s Tales” from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, May 2 at the Payson Public Library, 328 N. McLane Road. The public is cordially invited to this free event hosted by the Library Friends of Payson.
When asked about the nature of his presentation to the people of Payson, Trimble replied: “I’ll bring along my guitar and play a couple of songs and tell stories about Arizona oddities and why the state is exceptional.

This man of many talents gives stage concerts featuring western folk music and stories with his guitar, answers questions about the Old West from readers around the world in his “Ask the Marshall” column in True West Magazine, and appears frequently on radio and television programs as a goodwill ambassador for the state.

In 2006, he received a regional Emmy award for hosting the television show “Arizona Backroads.”
Trimble is the recipient of a multitude of recognition awards. A former Marine, he was inducted into the Arizona Veterans Hall of Fame in 2004. He received Lifetime Achievement Awards from the Arizona Office of Tourism and the Wild West History Association in 2007 and 2010, respectively. In 2011, Trimble was inducted into the Arizona Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame, received the Al Merito Award from the Arizona Historical Society, and was honored by the Arizona Centennial Commission as “One of Arizona’s Most Inspiring Leaders” along with Justice Sandra Day O’Connor, Senator Barry Goldwater and four others. In 2012, he was selected for the U.S. State Department’s “Cowboy Hall of Fame Tour,” a goodwill visit to Kyrgyzstan to visit our troops and share American cowboy culture with the people of that country. Trimble was named one of seven “Historymakers” for the year 2014 by the Historical League of the Arizona Historical Society. In 2015, Trimble was named “Westerner of the Year” by True West Magazine and received the “Semper Fi” award from the U.S. Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation.

In short, we could say that Marshall Trimble is a living legend in the realm of Arizona history and folk music.

Big Thank You to Arizona author Cobe Frobes

An Arizona history supporter, we are so glad to have Cobe Frobes sharing the history and stories in Tastes & Treasures cookbook. As the author of Streets of Forest Highlands, she appreciates a good read. She has sold over 70 cookbooks since March 15.

When asked how she does it, "It is a beautiful book and it sells itself.
I do explain that it is helping the Arizona Historical Society. People like that. Then I explain how you divided the state into three sections and selected historic restaurants from each section. I mention El Tovar at the Grand Canyon, Garlands in Sedona, The Camelback Inn, El Chorro's sticky buns, The Arizona Inn and the Copper Queen because I think those might be familiar to them. I tell them the history of the restaurants is included so it's a great book just to read and look at.
Sometimes I mention that I am friends on facebook with Marshall Trimble and lately he has mentioned the cuts the government has made to the budget.
(Many of these folks just winter down here from other places.) I like to show a couple [any] of the beautiful pictures because they are all wonderful. Sometimes I mention that a friend of mine once served a dinner party for the family of just salads with recipes that came out of this book. Then I tell them they make wonderful gifts. One friend has 3 daughters-in-law so she bought 4.
Most of our parties are pot lucks + BYOB. They are at an age where they are not acquiring 'stuff '.  In fact they are trying to get rid of stuff...but they know a value when they see it."

Honoree Marshall Trimble

Marshall Trimble commented on the Historymakers Gala, "Betsy Davis shot this photo of Vanessa and me on Saturday evening at the Arizona Historical League "Historymakers" event. I'm a member of this year's honorees. I'm probably the first honoree from Ash Fork. My high school teachers must be turning over in their graves."

He is so deserving of the honor. His acceptance speech was filled with humor and stories of Arizona. So glad to have his as a Historymaker.
