Women in the Classroom: The Life of Maria Urquides Online

Women in the Classroom: The Life of Maria Urquides Online Event
Tuesday September 29th, 2020
6:00 - 7:00 pm
Registration Link:

The Arizona Historical Society welcomes you to attend Women in the Classroom with speaker Jan Cleere. Join the conversation about Maria Urquides, “the mother of bilingual education in Arizona.” Urquides’ teaching career launched her humanitarian efforts towards educational equality. During the early years of her career, she was forced to forbid students to speak in their native language. Angry with the injustice, Urquides decided to change the landscape of teaching non-English speaking children.

Jan Cleere is the author of five award-winning historical nonfiction books detailing the lives of early pioneers who first ventured into the desert southwest. She is a Roads Scholar with Arizona Humanities lecturing around the state about settlers who were instrumental in colonizing and civilizing the territory. Jan also writes a monthly column for Tucson’s Arizona Daily Star newspaper, “Western Women.” Her next book, From Reveille to Taps: Military Wives on the Arizona Frontier, will be released in March 2021.

This program is being held in conjunction with the Arizona Heritage Center's exhibit, Still Marching: From Suffrage to #MeToo.

Steve Schumacher author and guest speaker at September meeting

A large group assembled for Sept Historical League Zoom meeting to hear guest speaker and author of many historical papers Steve Schumacher present "Phun Phoenix Phacts". Fascinating and very enjoyable!

September Meeting on Zoom

Historical League September meeting was another successful ZOOM gathering. Kudos to President Susan Dale for bringing so many of us together to learn news of the League and Arizona Heritage Center at Papago Park. Director Tawn Downs informed us the Center is part of Phase II and hopes to re-open Tuesday, Oct 16. Hours 10 am - 2 pm. No more than 20 in a room at a time. Glad to see we are moving forward!
