Sedona Schnebly's Apple Pie Dessert

Apple time. They are ripe and abundant so this is the perfect time for baking Sedona Schnebly Apple Pie Dessert, page 371 Tastes & Treasures Storytelling Cookbook II.

We tripled the recipe, making 4 smaller desserts to share with neighbors. Also tweaked the recipe a bit adding oatmeal to the topping; cinnamon, nutmeg and 2 tbsp lemon juice to the apples. Love the stories and history that go with these recipes. www.HistoricalLeague.org/shop.aspx

Thank you luncheon for Cookbook Committee

Co-chairs Cathy Shumard, Leslie Christiansen, Linda Corderman,
writer Lisa Schnebly Heidinger, Ruth McLeod
Creating Tastes & Treasures II was a HUGE undertaking. A Thank You Luncheon was held at co-chair Linda Corderman's home November 1 to recognize all those who helped with the book. Celebrating the successes and chuckling over the gaffes, we remembered the details of publishing a storytelling book.
We continue to share the stories of Arizona, her history, her people, food memories, photographs, recipes and promote the AZ Heritage Center at Papago Park with this book.

Norma Jean helps create raffle basket for AHS Convention

With the AHS State Convention in Tempe, April 25-27, Norma Jean Coulter has been finding appropriate books for one of the raffle baskets. Tastes & Treasures II and The Journal of Sedona Schnebly are two of the items.
The Historical League volunteers worked for over two years on Tastes & Treasures II: A Storytelling Cookbook of Historic Arizona. Printed locally, we are excited to see brisk sales after the first six weeks.  Lisa Schnebly Heidinger authored The Journal of Sedona Schnebly, a fascinating look at life in the West in the early 1900's. Sedona Schnebly is Lisa's great grandmother. Lisa also wrote the introductions to all 24 historic restaurants in Tastes & Treasures II.

Lisa Schnebly Heidinger - author and April guest speaker

Reading from her latest book, The Journal of Sedona Schnebly,
Lisa had us listening intently. The story of the beginning of the town of Sedona (named after her great-grandmother) is one of triumph and tears. A very touching and insiders view of life in the early 1900 in Arizona Territory.
Program co-ordinator, Diana Smith, introduced Lisa and thanked her for her contribution to preserving Arizona history.
There was quite a line of attendees waiting to purchase the book and have Lisa sign it.
The Historical League is also grateful to Lisa for writing the history of all 24 restaurants and resorts in Tastes & Treasures II: A Storytelling Cookbook of Historic Arizona. Her fresh voice and easy approach make this new cookbook a popular read as well as a well-written cookbook!

The Journal of Sedona Schnebly by Lisa Schnebly Heidinger

A delightful afternoon with soft breezes on a lovely patio drew fans and supporters of Lisa Schnebly Heidinger and Arizona History. They wanted to be the first to get The Journal of Sedona Schnebly, have her sign the book and listen to a reading.

Tastes & Treasures II, A Storytelling Cookbook of Historic Arizona is fortunate to have Lisa be a major contributor to the new cookbook, telling the stories about the historic venues. With her distinctive writing skills, the restaurants and resorts become more than old buildings. They hold the history of Arizona within their walls, and tell the histories through their recipes and foods.

Co-chairs of Tastes & Treasures II, Linda Corderman, Cathy Shumard, Leslie Christiansen and Ruth McLeod are very pleased that Lisa is an Historical League member!

Carolyn Warner and Lisa Schnebly Heidinger guest speakers at Nov 6 meeting

Lisa Schnebly Heidinger and Carolyn Warner
What a delight to hear from past AZ Superintendent of Public Instruction, Carolyn Warner, with introductions from historian and author, Lisa Schnebly Heidinger. The duo are quite good at public speaking sharing amusing anecdotes and fascinating stories. They had also teamed up to write a book called Before I Forget. Carolyn's latest book is The Last Words, A Treasury of Women's Quotes.
Carolyn explained her career, "From a teen who wasn't interested in getting married, to a woman with six children, I slowly got involved with the schools." She directed the state's Department of Education 1975-1987.  She also met every President from Truman to Obama.
Of her close friendship with Erma Bombeck, "One day we were in deep discussion in the kitchen, while preparing dinner for the family. Until the bucket of Kentucky Fried Chicken caught fire in the oven . . ." So many more great memories in the books. Looking forward to reading them.
The Historical League has also teamed up with Lisa in writing Tastes & Treasures II, A Storytelling Cookbook of Historic Arizona due out in January 2018.

The Journal of Sedona Schnebly

"The Journal of Sedona Schnebly"        by Lisa Schnebly Heidinger @ arizonawriter.com
Sedona Arabella Miller Schnebly followed her husband west when their small Missouri town condemned his Methodist religion. Arriving in Arizona Territory in 1901, they planted orchards and hosted early tourists in what is now named Sedona.  Read about a fiercely private woman’s life that is by turns amusing and heartbreaking, and always fascinating.

FIRST EVENT!
Sedona Historical Museum Saturday
Sept. 16; reading at 11 a.m. followed by
visiting and signing

Historical League member, Lisa Schnebly Heidinger is busy again. After writing all the stories of the 24 historic restaurants for Tastes and Treasures Volume II, A Storytelling Cookbook of Historic Arizona, she has captured the heart and soul of her great grandmother, Sedona Schnebly, in an audio book.
