TGen Tour January 24, 2024

 TGen founders welcomed the Historical League tour on Thursday, January 25. Dr. Jeffrey Trent and Dr. Daniel Von Hoff, honored as 2023 Arizona Historymakers, greeted us. Such a fascinating, amazing research center. They have made huge strides in the fight against cancers.

TGen mission: Medical Research Institute — We Are Dedicated To Conducting Groundbreaking Research With Life-Changing Results. We Research Cancer, Neurological Disorders, Infectious Disease & Rare Childhood Disorders.

TGen tour included visits to the many labs. Mary Perona took pictures and commented, “The guides explained the function of the labs so well, trying to keep it in laymen’s terms but . . . couldn’t help themselves with scientific and detailed terminology!”

TGen website: “Tour guests see first-hand the next-generation sequencing technology and biomedical research laboratories where TGen scientists unlock the mysteries of cancer, neurological disorders and infectious disease. TGen faculty and staff are eager to share TGen’s biomedical research and progress with the community.”

Outreach programs are important at TGen. High School students can have two weeks in the bioscience program and University students are offered summer internships.

Meeting with Pancreatic Cancer lab scientists at TGen was an incredible experience. We learned so much on our tour!! What a fantastic research center.

 Strong supporters of the Arizona Historymakers™ Program, Historical League members not only worked for two years towards the October 14 event, they filled tables with friends and family. The Historical League is grateful for the dedicated volunteers.

Just Ask Claire

 How do you plan a party announcing the 2023 Arizona Historymakers? One that fills the Arizona Heritage Center lobby to overflowing? Just ask Claire Nullmeyer to do it.

Historymaker Program Chair Diana Smith put it very well when she sent out thank you notes.

“Claire -- for your endless hours and love -- the cakes, the decorations, the tables, the reception table, ironing table covers, the flowers, the coordinating of AHS staff, the food service, the ordering of all the goodies, Mrs. White's special cake, --- all the myriad of details down to all the cleanup you did last night and returning the linens today. . . more than kudos.”

Hats Off to Historical League models at January 3 meeting

"Arizona Women who Might Have Worn My Hats" was the title of the program by Linda Starr at the January 3rd Historical League meeting. Linda has loved hats since she was 19 and has a hat collection spanning more than 140 years.
She has more than 200 hats, found in antique stores, estate shows, and garage sales,  and from friends who gave her their grandmothers' beloved hats. Her collection took off in the 1990s when she started doing vintage fashion shows in Scottsdale for the Scottsdale Historical Society as a fund raiser. They had beautiful clothes but no hats and no accessories, so Linda started searching for them. Linda, who resides in Sedona but spent many years in Paradise Valley, has given programs at the Arizona Costume Institute of the Phoenix Art Museum, the Questers,  the Butterfly Museum,  and many others.  She is a life member of the Sedona Historical Society and Scottsdale Historical Society, and member of the Sedona Questers and Palatki Questers.

Historical League June meeting via Zoom

Very involved, dedicated members attend the Historical League June meeting via Zoom, taking notes, getting involved. Over 30 attended our last meeting of the year but many will continue to volunteer over the summer working on events for fall.

Besides making sure the recipes were accurate and enjoying the good food, the Tasting Parties are more . . . getting to know everyone on the cookbook committee and becoming friends is an added bonus!

Tasting Party Desserts

When we talk about Tasting Parties, the desserts are often left out of the conversation. Not so at Cathy Shumard's home June 30. This was a feast for the eyes, mouthwatering for the taste buds and yummy in the tummy. Enough of those silly sayings - the desserts were outstanding.  All these recipes have been assembled for Tastes & Treasures cookbook Volume II. Historymaker Eddie Basha's widow, Nadine, sent us his favorite Chocolate Cake. Bonnie Newhoff baked it to perfection! Historymaker Mark Wilmer's daughters sent us a decadent Raspberry Torte. Cathy Shumard did a fabulous job re-creating it. The buttery rich shortbread is from The Spicery in Our 1895 Home. A big Thank You to Jan Murray for baking it.
