The Spicery re-orders Tastes & Treasures II

The Spicery is a featured historic restaurant in the new book, filled with color photos and recipes of Arizona.

Tastes & Treasures II cookbooks delivered to Spicery

We couldn't ask for a warmer welcome than the one we got from Matt Borowski of The Spicery in our 1895 Home in Glendale. Margaret Baker joined Norma Jean Coulter and Ruth McLeod to deliver Tastes & Treasures II cookbooks to Matt. The Spicery is featured on pages 108-113.
He was so excited to see the book, tearing off the protective plastic cover and thumbing through the pages. He enjoyed the photo of his creme puffs, loved the concept of the book and the quality. And he has lots of ideas for marketing his restaurant and the book, including family-style meals reminiscent of the 1950's. A time for families to be talking and sharing their experiences of the day at the dinner table (sans cell phones). His enthusiasm is contagious!
Fortunately, we had a reservation for lunch since people were turned away at the door. The Spicery gets very busy and no wonder . . . the food and service were wonderful.
Whatever you do, don't skip the decadent desserts.

Located in the historic Catlin Court area of downtown Glendale, this cozy shop serves a three-course tea ($23 per person) and lunch from 10:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. every day except Sunday. In 2012, Matt Borowski took over the business from longtime owner Martha Campbell and has kept most of her traditions in place, from the buttermilk scones and ham biscuits to the coconut macaroons and matching teapots and teacups. “People don’t want (the menu and atmosphere) to change,” Borowski says. Servers bring out the tea courses separately, with detailed explanations of each bite. If you’re with a guest who doesn’t fancy tea, The Spicery has a small but suitable lunch menu that always features a hot special of the day “geared for gentlemen.” Afternoon tea requires a two-day advance reservation. 

Tasting Party Desserts

When we talk about Tasting Parties, the desserts are often left out of the conversation. Not so at Cathy Shumard's home June 30. This was a feast for the eyes, mouthwatering for the taste buds and yummy in the tummy. Enough of those silly sayings - the desserts were outstanding.  All these recipes have been assembled for Tastes & Treasures cookbook Volume II. Historymaker Eddie Basha's widow, Nadine, sent us his favorite Chocolate Cake. Bonnie Newhoff baked it to perfection! Historymaker Mark Wilmer's daughters sent us a decadent Raspberry Torte. Cathy Shumard did a fabulous job re-creating it. The buttery rich shortbread is from The Spicery in Our 1895 Home. A big Thank You to Jan Murray for baking it.

The Spicery Tea Room in Volume II Tastes & Treasures

Glad to have recipes and photos from The Spicery in our 1895 Home in Tastes & Treasures A Storytelling Cookbook of Historic Arizona, Volume II. Owner Matt Borowski is passionate about the food and service and history in this charming old town Glendale home.

The menu is delightful while lovely antiques grace the rooms with vintage tea service, laces and linens. A recent visit had Matt showing us his newly remodeled patio. Just waiting for cooler fall weather to plant flowers, pots of ivy, tables and chair with newly designed wrought iron gates and fencing. This patio will indeed be a sought after area to enjoy lunch, dinner and tea and dessert.

Cookbook brainstorming sessions are FUN

Nothing like a working lunch, especially when Linda Corderman brought a delicious Chicken and Spinach salad and Cathy Shumard made scones using The Spicery recipe! Yummmmm.
We brainstormed about all that has happened with Tastes & Treasures, A Storytelling Cookbook of Historic Arizona, Volume II and what the next few months will bring. Looking forward to publishing in fall 2017.
