Photographer/videographer Extraordinaire Kyle Wheelan films 2023 AZ Historymakers Announcement

A picture is worth a thousand words. We are grateful for the pictures and short videos from photographer Kyle Wheelan who recorded history on Feb. 23 for the 2023 Arizona Historymakers Announcement.

Historymaker Program Chair (and Kyle’s grandmother) Diana Smith reports, “Kyle Wheelan is a senior in high school in California and has pursued photography as an avocation for years -- especially photographing undersea/underwater marine life. He loved meeting all of you, and being part of the Announcement Reception.”

Just Ask Claire

How do you plan a party announcing the 2023 Arizona Historymakers? One that fills the Arizona Heritage Center lobby to overflowing? Just ask Claire Nullmeyer to do it.

Historymaker Program Chair Diana Smith put it very well when she sent out thank you notes.
“Claire -- for your endless hours and love -- the cakes, the decorations, the tables, the reception table, ironing table covers, the flowers, the coordinating of AHS staff, the food service, the ordering of all the goodies, Mrs. White's special cake, --- all the myriad of details down to all the cleanup you did last night and returning the linens today. . . more than kudos.”

Mrs. Elizabeth White

As Historical League members, Tom and Cathy Shumard contribute a great deal to this non-profit organization. We celebrate them and all our volunteers who helped make the 2023 Historymaker Announcement a very successful event.

Mrs. White Celebrates 100th Birthday as 2023 AZ Historymaker

How do you celebrate your 100th birthday? Why not at the Arizona Heritage Center with 150 attendees? According to Todd Bailey at AZHC, "Mrs. White was in happy tears over our honoring her on Feb. 23 as an 2023 Arizona Historymaker." With every one in the lobby singing "Happy Birthday" she was overwhelmed.

She told us she was welcomed to Governor Hobbs office where Feb 20 was proclaimed "Mrs. Elizabeth J.  White Day", the Mayor stopped in at her Golden Rule Cafe, and the family threw her a party equal to a wedding reception.

Many Historical League members remember celebrating 1997 Historymaker Polly Rosenbaum's 100th birthday at AZHC with her favorite Chocolate Cake (recipe in Tastes & Treasures Vol I page 136). This recipe was modified by League member Claire Nullmeyer to individual servings and beautifully presented for the Historymaker Announcement Event Feb 23.

A favorite of Mrs. White's is a Coconut and Pineapple cake so we definitely had one of those.

The Historical League will again be honoring men and women who have made significant contributions to the state of Arizona with outstanding achievements in areas such as arts, athletics, communications, community service, education, medicine, and entertainment.

As a member of the Arizona Historical Society Central Arizona Chapter, the Historical League, or a Historymaker, you are eligible and invited to nominate living men and women who reside in Arizona to be considered an Arizona Historymaker honoree. Past honorees are listed on the left. To learn more about these Historymakers, visit www.HistoricalLeague.org and click on Historymakers. The nominations we receive are used by our selection panel to assist in determining who will become our 2023 Historymakers. Those selected will be presented and honored at a reception at the Arizona Heritage Center Museum at Papago Park on October 14, 2023. The highlights of the evening will be a video program sharing each Historymaker’s unique life accomplishments and an unveiling of an exhibit featuring their achievements. We hope you will join us for this celebration.

Before the event, each Historymaker participates in giving an oral history, that will be archived at the Heritage Center Library and will also be available on our website: www.historicalleague.org
