Leslie Christiansen echos our thanks to the chair of Historymakers Gala XII, Deb Short-Hester. We also want to thank Chef Leslie for her devotion to Tastes & Treasures Volume II. With Leslie editing all the recipes and making sure they are tested 3 times, the book has outstanding recipes.
The Miracle Muffins recipe is from Deb's Mom, Phyllis Short. They will be featured along with Phyllis in the Tribute page section of the new book.

Historymakers Gala chairs meeting

A Meeting of the Minds . . . this awesome group of ladies has chaired the Historymakers Gala and Recognition Program starting in 1992 with first chair Marilyn Parke. It is a privilege and honor to be included in this group. It takes hard work, dedication and passion but the Historymakers program is so very worthwhile.

 Congratulations on a successful 2017 Historymakers held March. We look forward to 2019.

 The purpose:
- Raising funds for education, exhibits, and other programs that assist the AZ Heritage Center at Papago Park.
- Contributing to the museum’s artifact, oral history and photograph collections.
- Increasing public awareness of the 80,000-square-foot history museum.
- Recognizing and honoring outstanding living Arizonans and celebrating Arizona’s statehood day, February 14, 1912.

Fabulous evening filled with Tuxedos, Turquoise and talented honorees. Kudos to co-chairs Deb Hester and Pat Faur for all their hard work in creating this AMAZING event. So many people to give credit to especially President Anne Lupica, all the committee members, and Andrea Evans of Evans Communications. The Arizona Biltmore ballroom never looked so good, the speeches and videos were inspiring and the food was delicious. The professional pictures will come later but here's a few teasers.

Despite the rain and a cow in the road, we took covered trucks to a remote area for a BBQ. The rain stopped, the food was delicious, the views amazing and the entertainment unique. Nothing like steak on the grill, beans with fry bread in the great outdoors.

Red Velvet Cupcakes from Deb Hester

Deb Hester brought these Red Velvet Cupcakes to the January Historical League meeting. Delicious! League members are great cooks bringing wonderful salads and desserts for our luncheon meetings. Many recipes in Tastes & Treasures cookbook are from League members.

When I asked Deb for the recipe she humbly admitted, "They were just a 2 boxes of Duncan Hines Red Velvet cake mix with the frosting and filling included.  I made the biggest mess in the kitchen with the frosting!!  Had it all over myself!  I'm kind of a kitchen klutz!" Thanks Deb for keeping things simple and easy.

Tea Ceremony at Japanese Friendship Gardens

 Eight of us were allowed at one time for the Ritual of the Tea Ceremony Chanoyu, that had its origins nearly 900 years ago. It touches on many aspects of Japanese culture. Definitely a learning experience and so much history was presented about the Tradition. Chanoyu interweaves four principles:
1.Harmony (wa) with people and nature
2. Respect (kei) for others
3. Purity (sei) of heart and mind
4. Tranquility ( jaku)

ArtFest a Success

Scottsdale's ArtFest at the Civic Center library is a wonderful opportunity to showcase Tastes & Treasures cookbook. Carolyn Mendoza did a fabulous job of running the sales and co-ordinating volunteers to man the booth for two days with very good results. Despite the wind and weather forcing an early closure on Sunday, the Historical League brought in $960 worth of sales of cookbooks, Centennial aprons and baseball caps. We are also able to "spread the word" about the Historical League, AHS Museum at Papago Park, Historymakers Centennial Gala and Children's Holiday Party. With lots of help setting up the tent, it was a fun event. Thanks to volunteers: Margaret Pogue, Linda Isaksen, Pam Ryan, Judy Yauch, Steve Yauch, Al McLeod, Deb Hester, Ruth Ann Hogan, Nina Fillips, Mariamne Moore and Bonnie Newhoff. We couldn't do it without you.

Cookbook at Moon Valley Country Club Ladies Luncheon

It was a great day for golf with cool breezes and sunny skies for the Moon Valley Ladies golf tournament. Deb Hester and Jeannine Moyle set up a lovely display of cookbooks and aprons to show the golfers during their luncheon and award ceremonies at the clubhouse.

The cookbook was well received. MVCC member Susan Crotty wearing the Carmen Miranda hat said she loves to cook and looks forward to making the great recipes.
