Navajo National Monument

Hiking back to the caves and petroglyphs was part of the fun at the Navajo National Monument. The trails were well marked. We took the one with the great view but would love to go back and hike into the valley. Binoculars are needed to see the detail inside the dwellings. It was a quick stop but well worth it on our Historical League tour.

Navajo Code Talker Museum in Tuba City

The Navajo Code Talker Museum in Tuba City tells the story in pictures, displays, artifacts and video of the Code Talkers. It was fascinating to learn the Code after remaining secret from the public until the 1960's.

BBQ in Monument Valley

Cow did not want to move
Despite the rain and a cow in the road, we took covered trucks to a remote area for a BBQ. The rain stopped, the food was delicious, the views amazing and the entertainment unique. Nothing like steak on the grill, beans with fry bread in the great outdoors.

Happy Birthday in Navajo

Navajo Weavings

Pat Faur watches a weaver at Cameron Trading Post
The detail in the weavings is stunning. Made by the Navajo women using no pattern . . . they create as they go. Traditional dyes are made from plants. Lucy and her brother at Gouldings entertained us in a hogan in Monument Valley. Showing us how to card the wool, use a spindle and roll it into yarn for weaving, we were impressed with her skills.

Snacks on tour bus to Monument Valley

Traveling with the Historical League involves wonderful snacks and Happy Hour on the bus. Bonnie Newhoff made individual servings of Granola with artwork combining petroglyphs and our Old Ned logo. Very classy way to start the trip.
The recipe is on page 196 in Tastes & Treasures cookbook.
