National History Day Students meet and greet

Evening Under the Stars sponsored by the David Wright House was a busy evening. A highlight was having five students from National History Day there to tell us about the program. Students work for a year on their projects and learn much about research, working together, finding their passion, making a presentation and more. Chandler teacher Stacey Trepanier gave us the background on Arysat Nejat before he spoke to the crowd.

We are pleased to have Canadian architect Barry Johns be our keynote speaker at Evening Under the Stars at the David Wright House. With overcast skies and no rain today, the event promises to be a memorable one.

Meeting with our contact at the David and Gladys Wright House last November, President Margaret Baker, co-chairs Kay Holcombe and Ruth McLeod made plans for a Spring Event. After months of planning for Evening Under the Stars, the event takes place this Saturday, April 9. And it looks like the rain will stop in time for a beautiful evening which is Sold Out. The luminarias are gone but the home is fascinating. We are pleased to raise funds for National History Day www.NHDAZ.org at this event.

Students and teachers will be there to tell us about the program.

Johns will tell us about Frank Lloyd Wright who designed and built the house in 1950 for his son David and daughter-in-law Gladys. Docents will tell us about the home during informal tours. And the silent auction will feature some very usual and priceless items.

Fruity and Tangy Meatballs

Adding a few interesting ingredients can change a simple meatball recipe to make it spectacular.

Ingredients Meatballs:
1 lb. raw extra-lean ground beef
1/2 cup finely diced mango
2 tbsp. ketchup
1 tsp. dried minced onion
1/4 tsp. salt

Ingredients Sauce:
One 15-oz. can peach slices in juice
1/2 cup sugar-free or low-sugar apricot preserves
1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
1 tbsp. Sriracha hot chili sauce

Directions:
Preheat oven to 450 degrees. Spray a large baking sheet with nonstick spray and set aside.

In a large bowl, combine all meatball ingredients. Mix thoroughly with your hands. (Don't be squeamish -- it's the easiest way!) Form 24 evenly sized meatballs from the mixture and place them evenly on the baking sheet. An easy option is to buy frozen meatballs.

Bake in the oven until meatballs are just cooked, 8 - 10 minutes. Meanwhile, drain peaches and transfer to a blender or food processor. Pulse until mostly smooth. Transfer to a slow cooker. Add all remaining sauce ingredients to the slow cooker and mix well.

Carefully transfer meatballs to the slow cooker. Stir to coat. Cover and cook on low for 3 - 4 hours.

Stir well and serve up meatballs with toothpicks and the extra sauce from the slow cooker!

“Splash Copper” or Copper Splash; is an art piece from the AHS museum gift shop.
It’s man-made art, with natural ingredients. The pieces are created by pouring molten copper at 2200 degrees F onto a flat surface, then cooling it by water. The pieces are then hand-buffed to give them a brilliant shine.

“Rock my World” a unique Necklace from the AHS museum gift shop.
Necklace is sterling silver with amethyst (purple quartz) and drusy quartz (rainbow) gemstones. Drusy quartz forms when tiny quartz crystals grow over a stone or another mineral, usually agates. The crystals are coated in titanium to give them a rainbow effect.

“Frank Lloyd Wright Lights the Way,” We have an extraordinary piece of architecture and function, a black edition of Wright’s Taliesin 3 Table Lamp 29” tall currently available for purchase only in Japan. Donated by the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation, the indoor table lamp uses incandescent candelabra bulbs. The light can be directed upward or downward as featured on the original light fixture, using the movable diffusers. It’s made from beech wood with a black stain finish.

Previewing the house prior to the Historical League event on April 9, we were delighted to see the details and learn so much about the building and Frank Lloyd Wright's intentions for the home. Designing the home for his son David and daughter-in-law Gladys, it was originally intended to be wood outside. But since David worked for a concrete block company in Phoenix, the plans were changed to include concrete.
Imagine what the area looked like in 1950.
