St. Anthony's Greek Monastery tour

Dressed in appropriate attire for a recent tour of St Anthony's Greek Monastery near Florence, the Historical League group experienced history and religion, art and architecture. Started in 1995 it now has one main chapel for the daily services, 9 smaller chapels and numerous gardens. Their website explains, "St. Anthony's Monastery is a place of repentance and prayer for the fathers and also for the faithful who are our pious guests. In honor of the saint whose monastery this is, and out of love and respect for this sacred ground, we humbly ask that you be properly attired at all times. Women are kindly asked to wear long-sleeved, loose-fitting shirts that fully cover the chest up to the neck; long skirts (or dresses) without deep slits; scarves that cover the head and wrap under the chin and around the neck, so that the neck is also covered. Please refrain from wearing lipstick when venerating icons and receiving Holy Communion. Please remove any visible face or body piercing jewelry."

Despite the dark skies and wind, the Membership Open House on February 23 turned out to be fabulous. Thanks to Susan Dale and Pam den Draak for creating such a lovely event. With so many Frank Lloyd Wright influences, yet distinctly Vern Swaback's designs, this home has unique details, architecture, views and amenities. Vern and Cille Swaback are excellent hosts.

Vern Swaback's "Skyfire" home to host Membership Open House Feb 23

At Home with Vernon D. Swaback: "A guiding principle in the design of my family's residence is that I wanted to feel somewhat exposed and vulnerable to the elements.
We named it "Skyfire' to be a celebration of the atmospheric effects of the desert."

Planning for David Wright House event began in 2015

Meeting with our contact at the David and Gladys Wright House last November, President Margaret Baker, co-chairs Kay Holcombe and Ruth McLeod made plans for a Spring Event. After months of planning for Evening Under the Stars, the event takes place this Saturday, April 9. And it looks like the rain will stop in time for a beautiful evening which is Sold Out. The luminarias are gone but the home is fascinating. We are pleased to raise funds for National History Day www.NHDAZ.org at this event.

Students and teachers will be there to tell us about the program.

Johns will tell us about Frank Lloyd Wright who designed and built the house in 1950 for his son David and daughter-in-law Gladys. Docents will tell us about the home during informal tours. And the silent auction will feature some very usual and priceless items.

Previewing the house prior to the Historical League event on April 9, we were delighted to see the details and learn so much about the building and Frank Lloyd Wright's intentions for the home. Designing the home for his son David and daughter-in-law Gladys, it was originally intended to be wood outside. But since David worked for a concrete block company in Phoenix, the plans were changed to include concrete.
Imagine what the area looked like in 1950.
