Tastes & Treasures donated to Glendale Elementary Teachers promote Historymakers

Arizona Historymaker™ stories continue to be shared. Recently 150 “Tastes & Treasures” books featuring Historymakers honored from 1992-201 were donated to Glendale Elementary teachers. A big part of the book, published by the Historical League, is the Historymaker recipes and family memories.

We will celebrate the 2023 Arizona Historymakers on October 14 at the Arizona Heritage Center with 9 new honorees. Congratulations to Frank M. Barrios, Michael M. Crow Ph.D., Angel Delgadillo, Dolan Ellis, The Honorable Terry Goddard, Denise D. Resnik, Jeffrey M. Trent Ph.D., Daniel D. Von Hoff M.D., Mrs. Elizabeth J. White.

AZ Historymaker 2023 Dr. Von Hoff interviewed by Carey Pena

Carey Pena comments after interviewing 2023 Arizona Historymaker™ Dr. Daniel Von Hoff:

Standing with one of the world’s foremost oncologists Dr. Daniel Von Hoff. He rarely does interviews, but came to our studios as part of a documentary project we are producing for Historymakers. Dr. Von Hoff’s clinical trials led to 3 of the 4 new FDA-approved therapies that improve survival for patients with advanced pancreatic cancer. He’s held many prestigious positions, including @tgenresearch and has devoted his life to finding cures. However, after interviewing Dr. Von Hoff, I am convinced his greatest gift is not his brilliance. It’s his compassion for people.

Historymaker Frank Barrios honored with Al Merito Award

2023 Arizona Historymaker™ Frank Barrios (1942-2023) continues to be remembered. Historymaker interviewer Zona Lorig writes, “I was at the AHS Annual Meeting Sept 29 to accept the Al Meritorious Award on behalf of Frank Barrios. Norma Jean Coulter is the Historical League member who worked with Frank since he was named a Historymaker. She did two oral histories, gathered all his photos, gave them to the Heritage Center and asked me to accept it in his memory.”

We will also honor him at the Turquoise & Treasures Historymakers Celebration October 14.

Teachers Raffle Basket at ASU with Arizona Recollections and Reflections

What teacher would not love this adorable basket filled with Arizona history? Designed by AHS Dr. Kristen Rex, the raffle basket went to a Geography, Social Studies and Civics ‘Back to School’ event (who are often National History Day teachers) held at ASU.  Note: Historical League’s Centennial book, Arizona Recollections and Reflections. It continues to tell stories of Arizona in first person accounts. And that is what NHD teachers and students look for.

NHD teachers receive Centennial book Arizona Recollections and Reflections

The Historical League Board of Directors approved the donation of 20 AZ Recollections and Reflections books to teachers who had participated in 2023 National History Day. The Centennial books continue to tell the story of Arizona, being great resources for the NHDAZ teachers and students. Thanks to Historical League member Cathy Shumard for suggesting the idea and AHS Dr. Kristen Rex organizing the donation to Geography, Civics and Social Studies teachers.

We much appreciate Historical League member Tom Shumard, the worker bee, who wrapped and mailed them.
