As part of the Memorial Day Celebration at the Heard Musuem, a noteworthy exhibit was presented by National History Day Arizona students from White Mountain Apache, showcasing exceptional research from the Dishchii’bikoh Community School in Cibecue, AZ.

Commemorating Heroes of Cibecue - the Heroes of Cibecue Student Book Series and Exhibit showcases children's literature, student artwork, and narratives paying tribute to Apache veterans and the students who helped preserve their stories. Student authors, illustrators, and narrators may also participate through live readings and reflections, creating a poignant experience that honors remembrance, service, and Indigenous heritage.

National History Day teachers Jeron Velasco and Simon Kibe explained the program at the Cibecue table. Jeron accompanied 2025 NHDAZ students to Washington D.C. Simon will go with the students this year.

Students and teachers are you ready?

The annual National History Day® contest theme is designed to help you think of a topic from any aspect of local, regional, national, or world history. With this focus, you can begin to ask questions that your research will help you answer, including how your topic is significant in history.

Here are the Arizona Historical Society we are partnering with library and archives, historical groups, and educators to develop a study guide to get you thinking about this year’s theme!

NHD’s theme will be: Rights & Responsibilities in History. This year’s theme invites you to consider questions of time and place, cause and effect, change over time, impact and significance. The key to this theme is addressing BOTH rights AND responsibilities. Both are powerful forces in history, but one does not work without the other.

East Valley NHDAZ judging

 Excitement was in the air at the NHDAZ East Valley for students, teachers, judges and volunteers. Historical League members Pat Faur and Sharron McKinney were on hand to help out. We are so grateful for Dr. Kristen Rex organization of this project.

AZ Recollections & Reflections book enjoyed by AZ teachers

 "Teachers all over Arizona appreciate you!! Many thanks to the HistoricalLeague.org for the book donations to the 'Back to School' conference," AHS education director Dr. Kristen Rex writes.

The conference hosted by GeoCivics offered much for teachers including gifts of "AZ Recollections and Reflections". The Historical League’s Centennial book tells stories of Arizona in first person accounts (from the AZ Historymakers). It continues to be a go-to source for teachers.

Teachers Raffle Basket at ASU with Arizona Recollections and Reflections

 What teacher would not love this adorable basket filled with Arizona history? Designed by AHS Dr. Kristen Rex, the raffle basket went to a Geography, Social Studies and Civics ‘Back to School’ event (who are often National History Day teachers) held at ASU.  Note: Historical League’s Centennial book, Arizona Recollections and Reflections. It continues to tell stories of Arizona in first person accounts. And that is what NHD teachers and students look for.

NHD teachers receive Centennial book Arizona Recollections and Reflections

 The Historical League Board of Directors approved the donation of 20 AZ Recollections and Reflections books to teachers who had participated in 2023 National History Day. The Centennial books continue to tell the story of Arizona, being great resources for the NHDAZ teachers and students. Thanks to Historical League member Cathy Shumard for suggesting the idea and AHS Dr. Kristen Rex organizing the donation to Geography, Civics and Social Studies teachers.

We much appreciate Historical League member Tom Shumard, the worker bee, who wrapped and mailed them.

NHD luncheon photos

Meeting "face to face" was a goal of the Historical League's luncheon for National History Day students. The students have been "online only" for too long. For many, this recognition and congratulation luncheon was the first time they were able to be with each other. It was enjoyed by 13 students, 4 teachers and 5 judges as well as parents and Historical League members.

Senator Mark Kelly and National History Day Executive Director Cathy Dorn gave speeches via videos.
