Historymaker Frank Barrios honored with Al Merito Award
2023 Arizona Historymaker™ Frank Barrios (1942-2023) continues to be remembered. Historymaker interviewer Zona Lorig writes, “I was at the AHS Annual Meeting Sept 29 to accept the Al Meritorious Award on behalf of Frank Barrios. Norma Jean Coulter is the Historical League member who worked with Frank since he was named a Historymaker. She did two oral histories, gathered all his photos, gave them to the Heritage Center and asked me to accept it in his memory.”

Celebrating Arizona Historymakers
Earlier this year, the Historical League, Inc. selected TGen Drs. Jeffrey Trent and Daniel D. Von Hoff as two of the 9 individuals named Arizona Historymakers for 2023. They join Frank Barrios, Dr. Michael Crow, Angel Delgadillo, Dolan Ellis, Terry Goddard, Denise Resnik, and Mrs. Elizabeth White as this year’s inductees.
Created in 1992, the award program recognizes Arizona individuals who have distinguished themselves with noted achievements and have maintained ties to Arizona. 90 Historymakers have been honored over the years at celebration events and included in the Historymakers Hall exhibit at the Arizona Heritage Center. Their videos, oral histories, and transcripts are uploaded to the League’s website and preserved in the Library & Archives of Arizona Historical Society’s Arizona Heritage Center.
Since 1979, the Historical League has contributed more than $2 million dollars to the Arizona Heritage Center and League members have volunteered over 175,000 hours to the museum.
The Arizona Historymakers Committee will honor the inductees with a recognition event at 3:00 p.m., Saturday, October 14, at the Arizona Heritage Center in Papago Park. The public is welcome to attend. Tickets are $250 each. For further information and reservations, contact Diana Smith at 865-414-3220.
