2019 Historymaker Gala Silent Auction

There were amazing Silent Auction items at the 2019 Historymakers Gala. Thanks to Carolyn Hartman and Mary Pat Honey for procuring and organizing such fabulous items.
Some of the items included dining at Lon's at Hermosa Inn, El Chorro and Stockyards. These historic restaurants are also featured in Tastes & Treasures II: A Storytelling Cookbook of Historic Arizona, with the book given as part of the auction prize. Some very fortunate winners will be reading the history and enjoying the delicious dinners soon.

Very Success Family Holiday Party for "Elf the Musical"

So many volunteers worked together to create this fabulous event. From the check in table, to silent auction, children's toy raffle, we are so grateful for the enthusiasm and the success at Dec 8 "Elf the Musical"!

Thanks to the lovely music of Susie Brinegar on the grand piano. The crowd enjoyed it so much, they joined in with singing Christmas carols.

Summer with the Historical League - History in Quebec

Nancy and Stan Evans had the opportunity to visit Quebec City, Canada this summer and sent these amazing photos. Nancy commented, "It was fabulous. We bid on this trip at the Silent Auction for Historymakers."
The Montmorency Falls, about 12 km from the heart of old Quebec City, are at the mouth of the Montmorency River where it drops over the cliff shore into the Saint Lawrence River.
There are staircases that allow visitors to view the falls from several different perspectives. Nancy and Stan walked across the suspension bridge over the crest of the falls, accessing both sides of the park and giving spectacular views. There is also an aerial tram that carries passengers between the base and the top of the falls.
During summer months, the falls give off a yellow glow due to high iron content in the waterbed.
The falls were named in 1613 in honour of Henri II, duc de Montmorency who served as viceroy of New France from 1620 until 1625. The remnants of earthen forts built by General Wolfe in the park were constructed in 1759.

They stayed in the majestic Chateau Frontenac.
In the late 19th century, William Van Horne, General Manager of Canadian Pacific (CP) Railway, began building the hotel as the ideal stopover for CP travelers. Van Horne retained the services of New York architect Bruce Price (father of Emily Post), who had already designed Montreal's Windsor Station. Drawing on the architectural styles of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, Price immortalized the history of the two great powers that had occupied Quebec City's highest promontory.
The years leading up to 1993 saw many expansion projects to fashion the Quebec City luxury hotel into what it is today, including the Citadelle construction in 1899, Mont-Carmel construction in 1908, and the Saint-Louis and Tour Centrale in 1920 and 1924. A new expansion phase was completed in June 1993 with the inauguration of the Claude-Pratte Wing, which offers guests a superb indoor pool, a physical fitness center and a magnificent outdoor terrace.
Fairmont Le Château Frontenac owes its name to a flamboyant French governor called Louis de Buade, Count of Frontenac, who guided the destiny of New France from 1672 to 1698. Frontenac's coat-of-arms can be seen on the outside wall of the entry arch and many other areas within the hotel. History casts a long architectural line: a 300-year-old stone bearing the Cross of Malta emblem is among the interior stones of the hotel's vaulted lobby.
  

Delightful Journey by Barry Goldwater raises funds for National History Day

Evening Under the Stars at the David Wright house April 9 is a big fundraising event for the Historical League supporting National History Day. www.NHDAZ.org 

For the Silent Auction we received this Barry Goldwater book that was created from his journals while rafting the Green and Colorado Rivers in 1940. The 1,463-mile journey was in a small wooden boat. The cloth covered autographed book about his adventure is filled with AMAZING photos
that he took and his stories.


Thinking I will just take a few glances at the photos, I find myself reading every entry. It's like I was traveling with him . . . getting soaked in the rain, shooting the rapids, sleeping under the stars, discovering remains of old smashed boats. He was a great storyteller.

The Silent Auction raises funds for National History Day and we are eager to help those students and teachers accomplish their goals of making the National Competition in Washington D.C.

Awesome children's raffle prizes at Wizard of Oz Dec 5

Childrens Holiday Party at Desert Ridge Marriot

Raffle prizes, silent auction, entertainment, delicious lunch, boutique shopping, clowns, Mr and Mrs Santa . . . what could be more fun than a day filled with this? The Children’s Holiday Party is an opportunity to create wonderful memories for families at the winter holiday time, while providing the Arizona Historical Society Museum with funding for programs for the children of Arizona.

The party will be held on Saturday, Dec 4, 2010 at JW Marriot Desert Ridge Resort and Spa’s Grand Ballroom.
