Dr Stewart tells the story of MLK Day/Civil Rights Day

Slide shows Rosa Parks with Dr. Stewart at First Institutional Baptist Church
With historic photos and his Eight Lessons, Dr. Warren Stewart presented a fascinating look at the struggle for Martin Luther King Day in Arizona. Followed by audience discussion, the talk at AZ Heritage Center at Papago Park on Thursday, January 19 was most informative and well received.
The Historical League is proud to honor Dr. Stewart as a 2017 Historymaker at the Historymakers Gala, Arizona Biltmore Resort on March 4, 2017.

Children's Holiday Party

Another fabulous and fun event for adults and children alike. The Entertainment was outstanding, Silent Auction items amazing, Children's raffle wonderful and lots of great shopping from the vendors. So much to see and do at the Arizona Biltmore Resort Saturday, December 17. Kudos to co-chairs Kassie Walters, Terrie Mainwaring and Ruth Ann Hogan for another successful fundraising event.

Co-editors of Arizona Recollection and Reflections were on hand to sell the Historical League's Centennial book. Joan Robinson, Zona Lorig and Ruth McLeod continue to get orders and ship the book, most recently to Yuma County library and Glendale public library.
Tastes & Treasures cookbook was also for sale and continues to be a great gift item.

Yogurt Parfait

Phoenix Bike Trails were busy this morning. We had a lovely 7 mile ride to the Adobe Restaurant at the Biltmore. Nothing like their Adobe Oatmeal/Yogurt/Fruit bowl. Yummm.

Since these are made to order, tell them to use skim milk since it normally comes with cream. And hold off on the sugar. It is very sweet already.

Tastes & Treasures cookbook has a wonderful Yogurt Parfait recipe on page 52. Just add chilled oatmeal.
But skip the bowl if you make it at home. Much prettier to layer in a tall parfait glass like Hassayampa Inn in Prescott does.

Oatmeal Yogurt Fruit Breakfast Creation

Happy Fathers Day to all those Dads out there. Hope you had a good healthy breakfast like the one we had at Adobe Restaurant at the AZ Biltmore Hotel.

Summer breakfast couldn't get better than this with cool oatmeal, cream, yogurt, walnuts and fresh fruit. We biked at 6:30 am to the Biltmore along the canals with soft breezes and temperature in the 80s. Didn't want heavy food so this was just right.

I love the Yogurt Parfait recipe from Hassayampa Inn in Prescott. The Adobe adds cooked and cooled oatmeal. Nice touch. I ordered the cup and it was a lot. The bowl is even bigger- enough to share.

Yogurt Parfaits pg 52 Tastes & Treasures
2 cups fresh blueberries
2 cups fresh raspberries
2 cups granola
Strawberry yogurt
Mix the blueberries and raspberries in a bowl. Alternate layers of the berries and granola in parfait glasses or wine glasses and top with the yogurt.
Note: You can use homemade or commercial granola and low-fat yogurt in this recipe. A recipe for outstanding granola is on page 196 in Tastes & Treasures.

AZ Biltmore hosts Mixer

Nothing like Happy Hour at the Arizona Biltmore's new Frankie and Albert's outdoor patio. The setting sun, the large roaring fireplace and wonderful samplings of food. The Phoenix Chamber of Commerce hosts several events throughout the year to it's members. Kay Holcombe and I attended to network with other members and spread the word about the cookbook. It was well received and we made many contacts while we enjoyed the evening. We both thought the Smoked Tomato Bisque made a great presentation looking like a soup shooter topped with sour cream but the taste was too smokey for us. The Caesar Salad made while we watched (including anchovies) was wonderful but the Flatbread appetizers won the prize for best presentation. Topped with a thick red onion, cherry sauce then goat cheese, chicken, watercress and mandarin orange and parsley it was a mouthful. It is a regular entre on the menu but we liked it as an appetizer.
