Donating AZ Recollections & Reflections to Libraries

Thanks to our generous sponsors we are able to donate Arizona Recollections and Reflections An Arizona Centennial Historymakers Commemoration to school and public libraries across the state. Most recent funding has come from The John F. Long Foundation, the Jerry Colangelo family trust and Lucy Walkup. Handing them out at Carnegie Library for a Librarian workshop was so rewarding. The librarians were very appreciative to receive a book with such insight into the Historymakers. They commented it was very valuable to 4th grade through high school.

This is part of our Centennial Legacy Project. Norma Jean Coulter and Patti Goss assisted Zona Lorig and Ruth McLeod for the event Sept 14-15.

Happy Birthday Arizona and Oreo cookies

Celebrate 100 years for Arizona and Oreo cookies.

February 14, 1912 marks the day Arizona became a state. The first batch of Oreo cookies were baked in New York City in 1912 also. The National Biscuit Co. (later condensed to Nabisco) registered the Oreo trademark in 1913.

Advertisements touting the Oreo “twist” technique debuted on trolley cars in 1923. Oreo ads ever since have been coaxing cookie monsters to twist, lick and dunk their sandwiches.

Oreos were first delivered to grocers in bulk tins and sold by the pound, but in 1920’s Nabisco introduced single-sleeve “self-service” cardboard containers.

The Historical League is celebrating Arizona's 100th birthday with a new book, Arizona Recollections and Reflections An Arizona Historymakers Centennial Commemoration. It is available on www.HistoricalLeague.org.

Jana Bommersbach comments on Centennial book

Award winning author Jana Bommersbach gave a wonderful report on the Historical League's new book, Arizona Recollections and Reflections An Arizona Historymakers Centennial Commemoration.

"You can't know Arizona unless you know her people - those who have struggled and triumphed over all these years, starting with those who waited 50 years to gain Statehood because the nation saw Arizona Territory as worthless and uncivilized.

There's no better way to know her people than through The Historical League's Commemorative Book. It's a priceless contribution to the history of Arizona and offers hours and hours of wonderful stories about wonderful people. Read it and know this: We sure showed them!!" --Jana Bommersbach, journalist and author.

The book is a lovely holiday gift giving idea and a great way to help celebrate Arizona's Centennial.

October is National Cookbook Month

Fall is a great time to try out your cookbook recipes and October is National Cookbook Month.

The Historical League's first cookbook (sold out), Arizona's Cooking Heritage, features a pioneer woman holding up two Gila Monsters on the cover. That recipe is interesting but tongue in cheek. Tastes & Treasures is filled with delicious menu ideas and the photographs are inspiring. You can also enjoy the history of Arizona leading up to it's Centennial celebrations February 1912-2012.

Leslie Christiansen to teach cooking class at DBG

Directory of Adult Ed at Desert Botanical Gardens, Steen Allard-Larson met the Historical League at our booth at Arizona Highways Travel Show. Carolyn Mendoza showed him Tastes & Treasures cookbook and Steen was very interested. He wanted to know if anyone in the League could teach a cooking class based on recipes from the book. Guess What??? We have our own chef extraordinaire, Leslie Christiansen who is an accomplished cooking instructor.

Last week Leslie and Ruth McLeod met with Steen at his office in the DBG. Steen signed Leslie up for a class Sunday, February 5 in the afternoon. It will be a treat to learn from her. I can't wait to sign up for the class myself. Stay tuned for details.

Frank Barrios guest speaker

Fascinating talk about Pioneer Cemetery in Phoenix. Frank is a wealth of information about early Arizona. His presentation at the Historical League April meeting kept us spellbound while we learned who is buried in the Pioneer Cemetery, who was unearthed and moved to another cemetery and the background to the stories.

We presented him with our new Centennial book but he already purchased it. Arizona Recollections and Reflections is getting to be more well known, a good read and wonderful reference book.

History that's Fun to Learn -Shipping Centennial books

With orders for ARIZONA Recollections and Reflections coming in, the books need to be shipped out. We are enjoying the ease of shipping through the post office using priority mail with the mailman picking them up. Zona and I had 20 to ship one day so we took them to the post office.

The Historical League is pleased that the book is an official Legacy Project. ARIZONA Recollections and Reflections gathers rare photographs and stories of history makers and companies that shaped the Arizona we live in today.

Historymakers Gala Final meetings

We are so close to the BIG day, Friday, February 11, 2011 and ready to be the "Official Kick Off to Celebrate Arizona's Centennial." A walk through meeting was held at Camelback Inn's Arizona Ballroom. It is a perfect setting for the event. Historic, elegant, and large enough to host over 500 attendees. We look forward to honoring Arizona's Historymakers. Site co-ordinator Kay Holcombe confers with Camelback Inn's assistant, Marjorie, and the Historical League's official photographer Mike Paulson. It is also the premiere of the new Centennial book Arizona Recollections and Reflections.

Volunteers go above and behond

Working towards the Arizona Centennial Historymakers Gala and Reception Program has been a 2 year journey for Historical League volunteers. The chairmen always contribute more but this year our volunteers have gone far beyond the usual donation of time, talent and resources.
Pictured here is our "Computer Guru" Joan Robinson with "Writing Guru" Zona Lorig. Margaret Baker and Pat Faur are two of many who have helped edit the AZ Centennial book and Historymakers Gala program. Thank you to all involved.

Centennial Historymakers Commemorative book

With deadlines looming, the volunteers working on this book have been amazing. Thanks to all of them but especially Linda Cathey and Norma Jean Coulter proof reading here with co-editor Zona Lorig. Computer guru Joan Robinson-Blumit continues to astound us with her talents in creating this 320 page book as co-editors Ruth McLeod and Zona look on.
This book is part of the Centennial Legacy Project and it is a huge committment involving thousands of hours but well worth it. Arizona Historymakers have been honored for their contribution to the growth of the State. This book details their accomplishments and stories.
