Fruity and Tangy Meatballs

Adding a few interesting ingredients can change a simple meatball recipe to make it spectacular.

Sweet and Sour Meatballs on page 165 of Tastes & Treasures is also a crowd pleaser. Available at www.HistoricalLeague.org/shop.aspx

Ingredients Meatballs:
1 lb. raw extra-lean ground beef
1/2 cup finely diced mango
2 tbsp. ketchup
1 tsp. dried minced onion
1/4 tsp. salt

Ingredients Sauce:
One 15-oz. can peach slices in juice
1/2 cup sugar-free or low-sugar apricot preserves
1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
1 tbsp. Sriracha hot chili sauce

Directions:
Preheat oven to 450 degrees. Spray a large baking sheet with nonstick spray and set aside.

In a large bowl, combine all meatball ingredients. Mix thoroughly with your hands. (Don't be squeamish -- it's the easiest way!) Form 24 evenly sized meatballs from the mixture and place them evenly on the baking sheet. An easy option is to buy frozen meatballs.

Bake in the oven until meatballs are just cooked, 8 - 10 minutes. Meanwhile, drain peaches and transfer to a blender or food processor. Pulse until mostly smooth. Transfer to a slow cooker. Add all remaining sauce ingredients to the slow cooker and mix well.

Carefully transfer meatballs to the slow cooker. Stir to coat. Cover and cook on low for 3 - 4 hours.

Stir well and serve up meatballs with toothpicks and the extra sauce from the slow cooker!

David Wright House Evening Under the Stars April 9

1950 aerial view with Camelback Mt
Previewing the house prior to the Historical League event on April 9, we were delighted to see the details and learn so much about the building and Frank Lloyd Wright's intentions for the home. Designing the home for his son David and daughter-in-law Gladys, it was originally intended to be wood outside. But since David worked for a concrete block company in Phoenix, the plans were changed to include concrete.
Imagine what the area looked like in 1950.

Lindsay gave us the tour. She is standing where the pool was.
Looking forward to our fundraising event for www.NHDAZ.org at the home on April 9. National History Day students and teachers will be there. Guest speaker Architect Barry Johns is very knowledgeable of Frank Lloyd Wright. Delicious food. Unique Silent Auction items. Guest pianist. A lovely Evening Under the Stars.

Wings Over Arizona with Historymaker Ed Beauvais

Aviation history was made in Arizona and recreated March 25 at the AZ Heritage Center at Papago Park. Thanks to the vision of guest speaker and 2017 Historymaker Ed Beauvais, Sky Harbor airport became a major hub for airline travel. Mr Beauvais described the setting in the 1960-70's as he entered the field and the changes that occurred in airplane travel.
Ed Beauvais and Jeannine Moyle

Jeannine Moyle and Anne Lupica

Judy Crable wore Hughes Air West bright yellow
uniform and cape. Only her GoGo boots are missing.
Thanks to Historical League member and flight attendant Jeannine Moyle and her husband pilot Jim Moyle,  the history came alive again. About 200 airline and aviation enthusiasts brought memorabilia and stories to the event and reminisced. Many Historical League members and general public enjoyed the evening as well.

Dancing Chef Jenn Lucien catered the event

Evening Under the Stars at the David Wright House on April 9

Rooftop view of Camelback Mt
We are so grateful to the David Wright House for sponsoring Evening Under the Stars on April 9. Kay Holcombe, Ruth McLeod, Karen Swanson and Margo Johns enjoyed the home as we made more plans for the event.  Frank Lloyd Wright designed this home in 1950 for his son, David, and daughter-in-law Gladys. It is amazing to walk the grounds and go back in time to 1952. But also amazing to see the vision Frank Lloyd Wright had, incorporating nature and the environment into his designs. He called this home "How to Live in the Southwest".  The home continues to inspire future generations of artists and architects.
