As part of our programming related to the In Celebration of our National Parks exhibit, Dr. Eric Nystrom will explore the history and language of the Organic Act, which calls for preservation for “enjoyment of future generations”. Is it possible to both preserve and allow the public to truly enjoy our national parks? Dr. Nystrom will talk about how that seeming contradiction influenced the history of the parks in different ways at different times in the last century.
Admission to the event is free. Donations welcome. Coffee is provided.

Eric C. Nystrom, Ph.D., is a historian in the College of Letters and Sciences at Arizona State University. Prior to joining ASU, he was an Associate Professor in the History Department at the Rochester Institute of Technology. His research focus is the history of American engineering and technology, especially late 19th and early 20th century mining. His interest also includes public history, legal history, and the use of open-source digital tools for historical analysis.

With delicious foods and friends gathering, the Tasting Parties have been very popular. Testing recipes for Volume II of Tastes & Treasures has become a wonderful way to make sure the ingredients are listed correctly, baking times are accurate and the instructions are easy to follow.

Historymaker Bennie Gonzales honored by AIA Arizona

Honored in 1997 as a Historymaker by the Historical League, Bennie Gonzales continues to receive awards. This event on February 16 is sponsored by AIA Arizona and the Rio Salado Architecture Foundation.

Artifacts from Historymakers are used for the Historymakers Gala display March 4 at AZ Biltmore and for the lobby exhibit at AZ Heritage Center at Papago Park. With all ages of museum visitors including lots of students, the photos and memorabilia need to tell the story of the Historymaker quickly. Zona Lorig and Ruth McLeod enjoyed collecting the artifacts from Historymakers Harry and Rosellen Papp, Dr. Warren Stewart, Senator Jon Kyl, Ed Beauvais and Dr. Robert Spetzler.  Wink Crigler artifacts have already been collected. Their histories are fascinating and we are glad they will be represented at this exhibit at the museum for the next 3 years.

The first in our “Coffee and Conversation” Series, Dr. Brooks Simpson will explore how Theodore Roosevelt employed presidential power and public opinion to prod a conservative Congress into action, transforming the nature of the presidency. President Roosevelt’s presidency and skillful use of the press coincided with technology advancements in film and sound recording. Join us for a fascinating discussion.

Brooks D. Simpson, Ph.D., is ASU Foundation Professor of History at Arizona State University, where he is a member of the College of Letters and Science faculty as well as Honors Faculty at Barrett, The Honors College. He came to Arizona State University in 1990 from Wofford College. He received his BA in History and International Relations from the University of Virginia (1979), followed by his MA (1982) and PhD (1989) in History from the University of Wisconsin. Author of six books, co-author of two more, and editor or co-editor of five other book publications, he was a Fulbright Scholar (Leiden University, 1995). His area of expertise is nineteenth century United States history, especially the period of the Civil War and Reconstruction, as well as the American presidency.
