New website in progress for Historical League

So much work has gone into creating a new, faster, more detailed, user friendly Historical League website. Thanks to Mary Perona and her team for making this happen.  Zoom calls were one of the many times her team has met to discuss the changes and updates.

From Historymakers events, Become a Member, Mission Statement, Volunteer, Donate, Contact, and Membership Connections, Mary has spent time making sure we are able to put our best face forward, better ways to function as a non-profit, attract new people, support the Arizona Historical Society and promote our events. All this plus great photos on a computer or cell phone.

Exhibits going to National History Day Final Competition in June

National History Day students have choices of how to present the theme "Rights and Responsibilities". They can design a website, write a paper, do a documentary, act a performance or create an exhibit. Check out these very interesting and elaborate exhibits that NHDAZ students are taking to College Park, University of Maryland in June for final competitions.

Years ago we learned how expensive it is for students to ship their exhibits. Many could afford to ship them to College Park, Maryland but could not afford to ship them back home to Arizona so . . . they threw them away. How heart-breaking after all that research and work. The Historical League stepped up and now sponsors the transportation of those exhibits with $200 funding.

May 1 Historical League meeting presentation

Monday means meetings at the museum since it is closed and we have the entire place. With presentations in the Steele Auditorium, lunch in the lobby and time to socialize, we enjoy the first Monday of every month.

We learned about the Historymakers Legacy Project presented by Zona Lorig; Website by Cathy Shumard; Social Media by Ruth McLeod at the May 1 meeting. Audience asked questions. Dr. Kristen Rex gave a wonderful report on NHD AZ. Treasurer Nina Filippi reported of the funds we are giving to 56 NHD AZ students for their trip to National Competition in Wash. D.C. Guest of Margaret Baker from Litchfield Historical Society was Director Lisa Hegarty. Happy Cinco de Mayo everyone!

Thanks to Dr. Josephine Pete for photos.

We are pleased to announce that our speaker at the general membership meeting on February 1, 2016 will be CAROLYN O’BAGY DAVIS, a fourth-generation descendant of Utah pioneers, and the author of 14 books on archaeology, quilting and the history of the Southwest. She will be speaking about an Arizona legend, Goldie Tracy Richmond, the woman who was the Tohono O’odham Indian trader who made amazing applique? quilts with images of the O’odham life.

Carolyn’s book, Hopi Summer, was selected as the OneBookArizona for 2011 and Desert Trader was named one of the Best Books of the Southwest 2012. Carolyn was founding President of the Tucson Quilters Guild and Old Pueblo Archaeology Center, and is an inducted member of the Society of Women Geographers and the Arizona Quilters Hall of Fame. She has appeared on HGTV, PBS, and Lifetime television programs and has curated many traveling museum exhibits.

The Arizona Historical Society owns three of Goldie’s world-renowned quilts, and we will have one in the lobby for our program on February 1. We decided to publicize this program to non-members, and to have the lunch catered by the Dancing Chef. He leases the museum kitchen and catered the HistorymakerTM Exhibit Unveiling event. Our general membership meeting will be at 10:00 in the boardroom, as usual. Our luncheon and program will be in the lobby at 11:30.

Updated website for Historical League

We are excited to introduce an updated Historical League website. There are still many things to correct but we are getting close. Zona Lorig and Ruth McLeod work to bring new colors, format, photos and links to www.HistoricalLeague.org. Many other League members have contributed to produce this new look as well as hiring a professional to guide us.

Thanks to Joan Robinson who started it and now Maika Winters as well as all the League members who have helped bring this website to a new level.
