NHDAZ West Region Competition at Northwest Christian Academy March 1

Judging for NHDAZ is serious business but these Historical League members made it lots of fun as well. Thanks to Cathy Shumard (who recruited many of the judges), Pat Faur, Katie Tovar, Sharon Scalise, Diana and Dave Smith for their volunteer time.

At West Regions NHD competition, they enjoyed working with the students: the interviews, the documentaries, the exhibits, websites, papers and performances.

From friendly smiles at 7 am with coffee, bagels and introductions, to presentations, interviews, judging, sandwiches and awards; Dr. Kristen Rex, Leonard Moody and Emily Hahn made sure the day went smoothly. Every detail was covered.

It takes a village and the Historical League provided judges, welcoming table and general all-around-helpers for the West Region NHDAZ competition.

Excited, nervous, enthusiastic and smart . . . these students did a fabulous job today at NHD West Regions competitions. Youth 4-5th grade. Junior 6-8th grade. Senior 9-12th grade. Below are a few pictures. Congratulations to all.

Wrigley Mansion hosts Mixer

Phoenix Convention Center sponsors 'Mixers' to network with groups promoting the area. The Historical League represents the Museum at these events as well as promotes the Historymakers Gala and Tastes & Treasures cookbook. The Wrigley Mansion is a perfect venue and we enjoyed the panoramic views, the interesting guests and the wonderful food. I only look like I am playing the piano with PR chair Tobe Daum and President Pat Faur.

The Shrimp Panna Cotta that Pat is holding is an unique mix of grilled shrimp over a pudding type base in a lovely presentation.

Panna cotta
  • 2 tablespoons water
  • 1 1/4 teaspoons unflavored gelatin
  • 2 cups whipping cream
  • 1 1/4 cups plain goat's-milk or whole-milk yogurt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup sugar

Preparation

For panna cotta:
Pour 2 tablespoons water into small bowl. Sprinkle gelatin over water. Let stand until softened, about 15 minutes. Whisk 1 cup cream, yogurt, and vanilla in large bowl to blend. Heat remaining 1 cup cream and 1/2 cup sugar in small saucepan over medium heat, stirring until sugar dissolves and cream comes to simmer. Remove from heat. Add gelatin mixture, stirring to dissolve gelatin. Mix hot cream-gelatin mixture into yogurt mixture in bowl. Divide mixture among six 3/4-cup ramekins, using about 1/2 cup for each. Refrigerate uncovered until cold, then cover and refrigerate overnight.

AZ Highways Travel Show photos

Vacation in Arizona was the theme at the Travel Show. With so many venues represented it is easy to stay in the state for all your travel needs. We shared a booth with AHS promoting the museum in Papago Park and the cookbook. The granola sampling was very popular. I think everyone came to the event hungry. Kay North and Jackie Berkowitz worked with Dr Peter Welsh. Even some 1880's dressed shoppers visited the booth. Thanks also to Margaret Pogue, Lindy Isacksen, Pat Faur and Tobe Daum who volunteered in the booth.

League Members Bring Cookbook Recipes to Meeting

Lunch is always a great reason to attend the monthly Historical League meetings. Monday, September 14 was no exception with Zona Lorig bringing Romaine Salad with Hearts of Palm and Artichokes pg 160. Yumm. It was delicious and almost all gone by the time I got to the buffet table.

Tobe Daum prepared Blueberry Muffins La Posada pg 62. No wonder the Harvey Girls were so popular, serving such a wonderfully light muffin packed with blueberries. After one taste, I realize why I do not buy muffins in the store.

El Chorro's historic recipe for Tastes & Treasures cookbook for dessert is Chocolate Icebox Cake pg 80. Betsy Davis prepared this 'melt in your mouth' cake and it makes me smile to think of the old Icebox style refrigerators. We have come a long way with convenience appliances but an old fashioned Icebox would still work quite well for this great treat.

Chocolate Lover's Delight Pie pg 152

My mouth is watering. Look at this rich, sinful, luscious pie. Two ladies made the same pie for the League meeting Monday and every morsel was gone. Nancy Evans is holding her creation with the beautiful topping of chocolate curls. Tobe Daum learned quickly that this pie cannot survive the drive to the museum in the 100 degrees. Hers went right into the freezer to "firm up". Nancy transported hers in an insulated container. Tobe also made these Sour Cream Muffins pg 41. By the time I got in line for the buffet, they were all gone so guess I have to make them myself.
The guest speakers, George and Donna Hartz, were very informative about their book, "The Phoenix Areas Parks and Preserves." George also serves on the Museum Board. Kay Holcombe and I tried to buy the book at the Museum gift shop but they were sold out so I will go online to purchase it...a "must" read. The League presented the Hartz's with a copy of "Tastes & Treasures."
