Happy Birthday NAU. We salute Dr. J. Lawrence Walkup for his leading role in 1966, during which Arizona State College at Flagstaff gained university status, and was renamed Northern Arizona University. During Dr. Walkup’s twenty-two year tenure as president, the college budget of $1.8 million and enrollment of one thousand students expanded to $48 million and twelve thousand eight hundred students. He was recognized for his achievements, honored as Arizona Historymaker in 1995.

#FunFactFriday Our school, our history. #DYK In April 1965, Senate Bill 98 created a change of name and status for Arizona State College at Flagstaff. The new Northern Arizona University officially came into being on May 1, 1966.
