Dinner at Inn of the Mountain Gods

Many of us enjoyed dinner at Wendell's restaurant at Inn of the Mountain Gods on Day 2 of our New Mexico tour.  We relaxed and reminisced about the history we had learned during the day.

Made from materials in the area, we saw much use of natural rock on our Historical League tour of Fort Stanton, N.M. Notice the inside walls of the living quarters were three feet thick rock walls.

As a gun enthusiastic, Leslie Christiansen was VERY interested in Sargeant Pope's authentic rifle. By the look on his face, I'm not sure how he felt . . .

Interesting to note that this Chapel was moved three times! It is slowly being restored and now is a popular wedding venue.

In 1855, the U.S. Army established Fort Stanton as an Infantry and Cavalry post to protect settlers in the New Mexico Territory. Featuring over 155 years of history ranging from its beginnings as a military garrison to a Marine Tuberculosis Hospital, to WWII internment camp, to a training school for the mentally disabled, to a drug/alcohol re-hab facility to a low security women's prison, it was a fascinating stop on our Historical League tour.  It is currently a state monument and museum, visited by tens of thousands of tourists each year.

Lincoln Co. Courthouse

Stories and Tall Tales of Billy the Kid were all over Lincoln, New Mexico during our Historical League tour. The area is known as Billy the Kid Scenic Byway in honor of William Bonney aka Billie the Kid.

The 75th annual pageant commemorating the "Last Escape of Billy the Kid" will take place in Lincoln August 7-9, 2015.

Historical League works with P.E.O.

Non-profits helping non-profits are always a good thing. P.E.O. held their state convention at the Pointe Squaw Peak May 2-3 with Tastes & Treasures cookbook as one of their fundraisers. Many thanks to Linda Corderman who organized the arrangement helping to raise funds for her P.E.O. as well as the Historical League.
