Arizona Historymakers on AHS YouTube channel

The stories of outstanding Arizona Historymakers have been captured on videos by the Historical League since 1992. YouTube is a great way to learn about them. @arizonahistoricalleague shows the Historymakers speaking at their receptions, their interviews, and photos.

Thanks to Cathy Shumard (Historical League) and Mariana Touloumes (AHS), the one minute videos are now shared on Arizona Historical Society YouTube also.

Congratulations to the 2023 Arizona Historymakers whose videos and oral histories are in progress now:
Frank M. Barrios, Michael M. Crow Ph.D., Angel Delgadillo, Dolan Ellis, Honorable Terry Goddard, Denise D. Resnik, Jeffrey M. Trent Ph.D., Daniel D. Von Hoff M.D., Mrs. Elizabeth J. White.

Historymaker Barbara Barrett supports AZ programs

From Frontdoors media:

Barbara Barrett has been named honorary chair of the Arizona Women’s Education and Employment  2018 Faces of Success Gala.
The event, which will take place February 9 at the PERA Club, will celebrate success stories and memories. This is also the event’s first year as a gala after 22 years as a luncheon.
Barrett will also receive the inaugural Barbara Barrett Arizona Women’s Education and Employment Icon Award, which will be presented annually in her name to a person who reflects courage, strength and character to overcome challenges and obstacles.
“We are thrilled to recognize and honor the significant contributions that Ambassador Barbara Barrett has made, not just to Arizona Women’s Education and Employment but to the entire community, and to acknowledge through this annual award individuals who have overcome significant barriers to create better tomorrows for themselves, their families and their communities,” said Christina Worden, Faces of Success committee chair and political involvement committee administrator at Salt River Project.
Barrett represented the United States as ambassador to Finland, served as interim president of the Thunderbird School of Global Management, held the position of CEO of the American Management Association and worked as a senior advisor to a U.S. mission to the United Nations.
She chairs the board of The Aerospace Corporation, serves on the boards of RAND and the Smithsonian and owns a guest ranch that has been rated the best hotel in the world, twice.
Despite these accomplishments, Barrett’s early life wasn’t easy. At 13-years-old she began working by giving horseback rides and lessons to help support her family when her father died of a heart attack. She worked multiple part-time jobs while she attended Arizona State University and held an undergraduate internship in the Arizona legislature where she drafted a bill that launched the Arizona Department of Transportation.
She was appointed vice chairman of the U.S. Civil Aeronautics Board and later was appointed as the first woman deputy administrator of the Federal Aviation Administration.
She recognized the importance of education and employment for women and became a member of the Arizona Women’s Education and Employment board during its formative years.

Annual O'Connor Justice Prize awarded to Jimmy Carter

Justice O'Connor was a 1992 Historymaker
2008 Historymaker Barbara Barrett presents
the award to Carter

Former President Jimmy Carter, 92, is this year's recipient of the O'Connor Justice Prize, an annual humanitarian award named after retired U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor. Justice O’Connor was named a Historymaker in 1992.

He and his wife, Rosalynn, founded the non-profit Carter Center in 1982.

“I am very grateful and honored to come here,” Carter said to a standing ovation from guests at the black-tie ceremony at the Arizona Biltmore on Friday.
In a clear, powerful voice with distinctive Georgia accent, Carter said he didn’t always agree with Ronald Reagan but that placing O’Connor on the nation's high court “was the best decision he ever made.”
Since leaving office in 1981, Carter has dedicated himself to humanitarian work and has emerged as an elder statesman.
His work at finding peaceful solutions to international conflicts and advancing democracy and human rights earned him the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002.
Notably, the Carter Center has led a campaign to eradicate the Guinea worm, a parasite that grows inside the abdomen and causes painful burning.
Since the non-profit center began working on the disease three decades ago, infections have fallen from 3.5 million a year to 25 cases last year, according to the center.
A cancer survivor, Carter successfully underwent treatment for melanoma that had spread to his brain in 2015.
Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter have been married 70 years. “Seventy-one if I make it to July,” he said to the audience.

Recognition Luncheon committee enthusiastic about the May 3 Wrigley Mansion event

Guest speaker Barbara Barrett
Co-chair, Barb Ehrhard, and her committee are enthusiastic about this day. "This is truly a BIG event.  We have a fabulous and distinguished speaker -- Ambassador Barbara Barrett, who is a Historical League member, Historymaker, aviation attorney, diplomat, rancher, chairman of the Aerospace Corporation, backup space flight participant to International Space Station, first civilian woman to land an FA-18 Hornet on an aircraft carrier, member of several boards including Smithsonian, Sally Ride Science, and O'Conner Institute, and owner of the Triple Creek Ranch in Montana, which Travel+Leisure recognized as one of the best hotels in the world. We will have two sets of free tours of the Mansion, raffle prizes, and of course, our Annual Meeting and Recognition of Volunteers this past year.  Thus, we needed a large committee so that no one person felt overwhelmed with any tasks.  Plus, what a great way to get to know each other better and have fun!

This event would be the perfect time to bring family and friends to appreciate the history of the Wrigley Mansion, the novelty of Kentucky Derby hats and the wonderful and rare opportunity to enjoy one of our own Historymakers speak. We hope you can come."
For reservations, please contact Rebecca Stone or www.HistoricalLeague.org

Historymaker Barbara Barrett to speak at Annual Recognition Luncheon May 3

Barbara Barrett’s career has featured several “firsts.” She was appointed by President Reagan to be the first woman deputy director of the Federal Aviation Administration. She was also the first Republican woman to run for Governor of Arizona and the first civilian woman to land an F/A-18 Hornet on an aircraft carrier.
Barbara has been chairman of the Aerospace Corporation, member of the boards of California Institute of Technology, Sally Ride Science, RAND Corporation, Smithsonian Institution, Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans and Lasker Foundation. She and her husband Craig own Triple Creek Ranch in Montana, named by Travel + Leisure as the best hotel in the world for 2014.
She reflected back to her time studying at ASU, "During an internship at the Arizona State Legislature, I drafted transportation legislation and met community leaders. “I had the privilege of working with such superstars as Sandra Day O’Connor, Bill Jacquin, Jim McNulty, Burt Barr and Stan Akers. They were a line-up of wonderful leaders and role models who helped set a course for me of community involvement, as well as political involvement.”

Join us for this event. $50 includes lunch and tour of Wrigley Mansion. RSVP at www.HistoricalLeague.org
