Unique visitor to AZ Heritage Center at Papago Park

Wonder what interests this little guy at the entrance to the AZ Heritage Center at Papago Park? Lots of interesting wildlife live in the riparian area next to the museum. This roadrunner fascinating us all. Mariamne Moore tried to get "up close and personal" but he would have nothing to do with her on a sunny November day.
AZ Heritage Center director Tawn Downs comments, "He is a regular. He has a little limp, which makes him even more adorable."

Kai one of ten in USA serving authentic Native American dishes

Kai at the Sheraton Wild Horse Pass in Phoenix

from TRAVELCHANNEL.COM
"Think of Kai as a high-end journey through new Native American cuisine. The seasonal menu draws from the Pima and Maricopa tribes, so you might find a 60-day corn and Cherokee tomato bisque, hand-picked lettuce with wolfberry snow and native seed brittle, goose and rabbit with pima wheat berries or wild boar with acorn ash. Did we mention it’s earned both the AAA Five Diamond and Forbes Five-Star recognition?"

Look for history and some of these recipes in Tastes & Treasures, A Storytelling Cookbook of Historic Arizona released mid January, 2018. Chef Ryan Swanson continues to cook up the best. Pre-order now at www.HistoricalLeague.org/shop.aspx

The Journal of Sedona Schnebly by Lisa Schnebly Heidinger

A delightful afternoon with soft breezes on a lovely patio drew fans and supporters of Lisa Schnebly Heidinger and Arizona History. They wanted to be the first to get The Journal of Sedona Schnebly, have her sign the book and listen to a reading.
Linda Corderman, Cathy Shumard, Ruth McLeod with Lisa

Tastes & Treasures II, A Storytelling Cookbook of Historic Arizona is fortunate to have Lisa be a major contributor to the new cookbook, telling the stories about the historic venues. With her distinctive writing skills, the restaurants and resorts become more than old buildings. They hold the history of Arizona within their walls, and tell the histories through their recipes and foods.

Carolyn Warner and Lisa Schnebly Heidinger guest speakers at Nov 6 meeting

Lisa Schnebly Heidinger and Carolyn Warner
What a delight to hear from past AZ Superintendent of Public Instruction, Carolyn Warner, with introductions from historian and author, Lisa Schnebly Heidinger. The duo are quite good at public speaking sharing amusing anecdotes and fascinating stories. They had also teamed up to write a book called Before I Forget. Carolyn's latest book is The Last Words, A Treasury of Women's Quotes.
Carolyn explained her career, "From a teen who wasn't interested in getting married, to a woman with six children, I slowly got involved with the schools." She directed the state's Department of Education 1975-1987.  She also met every President from Truman to Obama.
Of her close friendship with Erma Bombeck, "One day we were in deep discussion in the kitchen, while preparing dinner for the family. Until the bucket of Kentucky Fried Chicken caught fire in the oven . . ." So many more great memories in the books. Looking forward to reading them.
The Historical League has also teamed up with Lisa in writing Tastes & Treasures II, A Storytelling Cookbook of Historic Arizona due out in January 2018.
