Christmas Crackers

Did you have Christmas Crackers at your Holiday dinner table?

On a trip to Paris in 1840, Londoner Tom Smith discovered "bon bons" wrapped in a twist of tissue paper. The entrepreneur expanded this idea and created Christmas Crackers that snapped when pulled open. They were filled with small gifts, jokes, poems, paper hats, jewelry and/or miniature toys.

The company was very aware of current affairs and crackers were created for the Suffragettes, War Heroes, Charlie Chaplin, The Coronation and many other great occasions. A British tradition that continues today, exclusive crackers are even made for the Royal Family.

Holiday Frozen Yogurt Bark

Ingredients:
1 1/4 cups natural light whipped topping (like the kind by So Delicious or Truwhip)
1 cup fat-free vanilla yogurt
1/2 tsp. vanilla extract
1/4 tsp. peppermint extract
Dash salt
1/8 tsp. red food coloring
1 candy cane (or 3 mini candy canes or 3 starlight mint candies), crushed
1 tbsp. mini semi-sweet chocolate chips

Directions:
Line a 9-inch pie pan with parchment paper. (A springform pan works best).
In a medium-large bowl, combine whipped topping, yogurt, vanilla extract, peppermint extract, and salt. Mix until smooth and uniform.
Spread mixture into the pan, and smooth out the top.
Place food coloring in a very small bowl.
Dip the back of a spoon or a knife into the food coloring, and swirl into the yogurt mixture.
Top with remaining ingredients, and lightly press to adhere.
Freeze until solid, at least 2 hours.

Successful Holiday event at Newsies

Thanks to Chairs Mary Parker, Bonnie Newhoff, Nancy Evans and Dianne Linthicum, the Family Holiday Party at Phoenix Theatre was a big hit this year. Held on Saturday, December 9, the theatre was full of excitement, holiday cheer and beautiful decorations.
Chair Nancy Evans commented, "The Silent Auction sold 8 trips! The Winspire trips included:  2 trips to Charleston, SC,  4 trips to Nashville, TN, 1 trip Masters Golf practice round Augusta, Ga., and 1 trip to New Orleans, LA. The reception was unbelievable with its assortments of sweets and savory plus cheeses. The raffle had high quality items. The Newsie play was outstanding!"

Editing Tastes & Treasures II Cookbook

Now that we have Tastes & Treasures in a draft copy, we are ready to edit. Cathy Shumard prepared a delicious lunch so we could work through the day at her home. Co-chairs Cathy, Linda Corderman, Leslie Christiansen and Ruth McLeod were eager and willing to proof read!

Unique visitor to AZ Heritage Center at Papago Park

Wonder what interests this little guy at the entrance to the AZ Heritage Center at Papago Park? Lots of interesting wildlife live in the riparian area next to the museum. This roadrunner fascinating us all. Mariamne Moore tried to get "up close and personal" but he would have nothing to do with her on a sunny November day.
 AZ Heritage Center director Tawn Downs comments, "He is a regular. He has a little limp, which makes him even more adorable."
