Crockpot oatmeal breakfast

Crockpot Oatmeal Breakfast

Want breakfast tomorrow without lifting a finger?

Place 2 sliced apples, 1/4 cup brown sugar, 1 tsp cinnamon, pinch salt in the bottom of the crock pot.
Pour in 2 cups of steel cut oatmeal, 2 cups of milk and 2 cups water.
Do NOT stir.
Cook overnight for 8 - 9 hours on low.

Comments: try cooking in the evening and watching it so it doesn’t burn. Then refrigerate and warm up for breakfast.

I like to offer additional ingredients when I serve it such as craisins, raisins, dried apricots, walnuts, bananas, more brown sugar and cinnamon. Yummmm.

Note:It is important to use Steel cut oats not regular oatmeal. Steel cut oats, sometimes labeled "Irish oatmeal," look like small pebbles. They are toasted oat groats—the oat kernel that has been removed from the husk that have been cut in 2 or 3 pieces.

Just started my crockpot. I can't wait until breakfast. I will post again tomorrow morning with results.

Ok, followed the instructions exactly. Why is my oatmeal stuck to the bottom, way over cooked, and thick enough to eat with a fork? There is no moisture left. My cook time was just under 8 hours. Bummer. :(

Three ideas that might help.

1.Grease the inside of the crockpot before you add ingredients. You can also use spray-on product.

2.Create a double boiler method. Place Steele cut oats in a smaller inner bowl.
Add the four cups of water, milk or half and half, brown sugar, vanilla, butter and cinnamon sugar. If you would like to add dried fruit or a cut up apple add it as well.

Fill the crock with water to about halfway.
Set the inner bowl in the crock and see how high the water rises. Add more water in the crock pot if necessary. Try to match it so that the water reaches about the same height on the outside of the oats bowl or just below the bowl. Place the lid on your crock pot. Set on low and go to bed. The oatmeal needs to cook on low for about 7-8 hours in this steamy bath.

3.Reduce the amount of Steele cut oats to 1 1/2 cup and use the double boiler method.

Hope this helps. It certainly smells wonderful when you wake up in the morning.

I use the "crock pot cooking bags" and spray the inside before adding ingredients!
