Tempe Book Festival Nov 2

Tempe Book Festival, Nov 2, was a lovely day to connect with folks interested in History of AZ and cooking and storytelling. Patti Goss and Ruth McLeod sold books as they talked about the AZ Heritage Center and the Historical League. We will have a booth at Fountain Hills Festival of the Arts, Nov 8-10. Strategic Planning Meeting

Fabulous strategic planning meeting for the Historical League at The Scott hotel was held on Monday, November 4. We talked in great depth about the future of the Historical League and how to get there.
New League member, Pat Grogg was an amazing facilitator.

Janet Weiss takes Tastes & Treasures on the road

Tastes & Treasures was at Scottsdale's Stonegate Boutique yesterday with Janet Weiss creating an inviting display. 
Janet sold cookbooks as she talked about the Historical League, Historymakers Program and all the great things happening Arizona Heritage Center at Papago Park in Tempe. We are so fortunate to have her as a volunteer!

Indian School Historical League Tour

99 years of history can be found in the middle of Phoenix at Steele Indian School Park. Thanks to Katie Tovar and Karolee Hess for organizing a fabulous tour of the buildings and park. With 40 Historical League members attending, it was a great success.

Guide Rosalie Talahongva attended school as did several of her family members.

Run as a military establishment, it was self-sufficient with the children in uniforms, had demerits for misbehavior, worked the 160 acres of farm land, laundry, print shop, housekeeping, gardening, and more.
At the height of the school's activity 1900-1935 there were over 100 structures. Before the 1950s when many structures were demolished and the campus modernized, this made up the largest collection of buildings of one period and associated function in Arizona. Three buildings were saved and are registered with the National Register of Historic Places - the Dining Hall built in 1901, the Band-Chorus Music Building 1931 and the Memorial Hall 1922.

placed in their grade by height and size. 

Hearing the real story of Ira Hayes brought great insight into the man.

2019 Historymaker Exhibit Opening on October 24

Historical League is proud to present the 2019 Historymakers Lobby Exhibit at AZ Heritage Center at Papago Park on October 24. Honored are Betsey Bayless, Dr. Arthur Cabooter, Michael J. Fox, Alfredo Gutierrez, Merrill Mahaffey and Vernon D. Swaback.
The exhibit will showcase the exceptional contributions the 2019 honorees have made to our state and provide viewers direct access to the amazing oral histories and accomplishments of each diverse group of Historymakers since the program's inception in 1992. 
The Exhibit will open Thursday, October 24 and stay open during regular museum hours.

Sedona Arts Festival October 12-13

Thanks to our wonderful volunteers, we had a lovely booth at the Sedona Arts Festival selling Tastes & Treasures cookbooks and talking about the Arizona Heritage Center at Papago Park.
These awesome Historical League members did a fabulous job sharing stories of Arizona and also promoting our Historymaker Program:  Pat and Pete Faur, Donna Esposito (made a new sign), Carolyn Mendoza, Carolyn Hartman, Karolee Hess, Norma Jean Coulter, Lynn Wood, Pat Christopherson, Pam Stevenson, Mariamne Moore with Scott, Susan and Ennis Dale.
