Win Holden, October guest speaker

Win Holden, former publisher of "Arizona Highways" magazine and now its informal ambassador, was our October guest speaker. He enlightened us as to how the magazine has remained popular through historical and contemporary photographs, attracting elite landscape photographers and using an unconventional publishing business model.

Guest speaker at Historical League Recognition Luncheon

Robert Stieve, editor of Arizona Highways, was the guest speaker at Historical League's Recognition Luncheon at Paradise Valley Country Club. What a wonderful presentation filled with history and fascinating stories of the Grand Canyon as we celebrate the 100th anniversary of the park.
Did you know that AZ Highways gets no funding from the state? It made publishing history In 1946 with the first all-color magazine in the world. The cover of that issue was a photograph from Barry Goldwater who contributed many more photographs over the years. Presented with a copy of Tastes & Treasures II: A Storytelling Cookbook of Historic Arizona as a thank you gift, Robert was most appreciative.

Ghost Towns of Arizona

Fairbank's passengers wait at the town's railroad depot.
October 2018 Arizona Highways features 13 Ghost Towns with historic pictures. Where do these great photos come from? Arizona Historical Society.
Interesting stories with authentic photos to make the places come to life as they were in their heyday.
What better way to celebrate Halloween than with a ghost story!

More stories from AZ Highways Win Holden

Goldwater's wonderful photography among the Navajos.
Many people know that Historymaker Barry Goldwater's hobby was photography. Over the years, he shot many covers and photo stories for AZ Highways.

During Win Holden's presentation at the February Historical League meeting, we learned that Ansel Adams was also a contributor to AZ Highways.

After his very interesting presentation, Carolyn Hartman thanks Win with a copy Tastes & Treasures cookbook.

Win Holden from AZ Highways- Guest Speaker

Entertaining and informative, Win Holden gave us so much history of Arizona and charming stories of our state and it's namesake magazine. The presentation included amazing photos from past issues including this one of Chuckawalla Smith, self proclaimed Rockologist who traveled around the state.

There was much discussion on how this car and driver got to the edge of this cliff . . . and how did he safely return?

Win is a great ambassador for Arizona and we were very pleased to have him as guest speaker at our February Historical League meeting.
